In a class I took on the political economy of development (sorry for the mouthful), we read an interesting book called Democracy and Development. The authors suggested, to much controversy, that democracy is not the best form of government for developing nations.

This isn’t a political blog, so I’ll let you read the book and form your own conclusions. But I do want to compare that theory to the business world.

For companies, reaching consensus is a crappy way to do things unless you have a lot to lose. Consensus is slow, safe, and regresses to the mean. To change the status quo, you have to just go.

Consensus is a fine way to run a large company intent on maintaining current revenue, just like it’s a fine way to run a rich and powerful nation - for awhile.

But if you don’t have anything yet, consider starting things yourself before anyone gives you permission.
